During my years of experience as quality director in multinational companies I have attended the first person to the exponential increase in materials and components that went from being supplied from local suppliers in Western countries to be bought in Asia, mainly in China.

At first we tried to transfer to China the pieces with less technical complexity due to our uncertainty with respect to the levels of quality and reliability of Chinese manufacturers, later due to the intense pressure due to the reduction of costs we also delocalize more complex products technically.

Western factories become assembly or distribution plants of parts and products made in China, either by multinational companies with a factory in China or directly by Chinese manufacturers.

The main criterion to decide the transfer was the final price of the pieces, there was so much difference with the local pieces that it was impossible to oppose this wave, since if our competitors were obliged to achieve the survival of the company.

As maximum quality responsible for the quality of quality to accept a quality audit to the supplier and first samples to homologate the products manufactured in China.

In general, the first samples supplied fulfilled the specifications.

Once the deliveries of components of the serial production arrived, it was very frequently when true nightmare began due to the enormous variability of the quality of the products depending on the manufacturing lots.

 

These problems forced us to stop vehicle production, increased rejection during production and especially market claims.

It was then that all those who previously pressed us to accept the pieces made in China, hid and left us alone in the face of huge and continuous quality problems.

 

When investigating we realized that the quality audits to Chinese suppliers had not been carried out by quality expert personnel but generally by trading companies and that the first samples were not actually not since they had not been carried out with the media definitive materials and humans with which production was going to be initiated, but had frequently carried out by hand, handmade or by engineering technicians and not by production operators, nor in the machines that were going to be used in the mass production but in special machines to build prototypes, etc., etc., etc ...

 

Those first samples that fulfilled the specifications perfectly, were not representative of anything and hence the problems, then it is when we really understood the true magnitude of the problem.

I met a German manufacturer of security pieces in China that had only been once in the factory of its Chinese partner who made pieces with the brand of the multinational.

There is a lack of control of who, how, when and where it manufactures our pieces in China.

Before launching the adventure in China tempted by breaking prices, the situation must be evaluated very well.

Multinational companies that can afford to have a team of experts as a company continuously in China, designing, organizing the quality system, forming operators, controlling the results, applying corrective measures, etc., they can say that they have more Possibilities of success that the one who closes his eyes and does not know what is happening with his pieces, this buyer is assuming incalculable risks.
